Stop Finding Your Dream Job - Create It!
“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
This quote has been thrown around like a motivational frisbee, and it's been attributed to everyone from Confucius to Mark Twain. But let's be real - how exactly do you “find” this magical job that lets you float through life without a care?
Let me give you my two cents… Spoiler alert: I don’t believe in “finding” anything.
Why “Finding” Anything Is Overrated
People love talking about “finding” things - finding happiness, finding your purpose, finding “yourself” (cue the dramatic music). And my personal favorite? “Finding” your soulmate. Oh, if only it were that simple!
The problem with all this finding is… how do you know when you've actually found it?
Let’s be honest - happiness, love, and purpose don’t come with a neon sign that says, “Congrats, you’ve arrived!” So why are we all so obsessed with this idea of finding?
Instead of waiting for the perfect thing to fall into your lap, I say create it.
The Reality of Enjoying Your Job
The whole idea of a “dream job” sounds fantastic, right? A job you’d do for free? Well, I’ve had jobs I enjoyed - some more than others. I’ve been a computer tech, a programmer, a financial services rep, a taxi driver, I even worked at a meat works. And let's not forget the years I spent working at a men's maximum security prison.
Out of all those roles, there were two I particularly enjoyed: programming and my job at the prison (for the last few years, at least). But here's the thing: I didn’t start out loving every second of those jobs. Sometimes you have to learn to appreciate what a job does for you.
Shifting Perspective: It's All About the List
At one point, I absolutely dreaded going to work at the prison. But then I sat down and did an exercise that changed my mindset. I made a list of all the things my job provided:
- It paid the bills and funded my life coach studies.
- It gave me the freedom to travel, including trips to Bali.
- It allowed me to treat myself to a few toys and enjoy life outside of work.
- I had 12-hour shifts, so I only worked three days a week, giving me plenty of free time.
Once I looked at the positives, I realized that my job wasn’t just something I had to do - it was allowing me to live a pretty good life. And guess what? The dread faded, and I started enjoying my job again (most days, anyway).
The Adventure of Creating Your Future
In 2022, osteoarthritis in my hip forced me to leave the prison job. Suddenly, I was at a crossroads - 54 years old, two grandkids, and no interest in working for someone else. I wanted to control my time, my income, and never have to ask for vacation approval again.
After a bit of a break (cue thinking music), I turned to digital marketing and affiliate marketing. I won’t lie - it’s been a struggle. Putting yourself out there, sharing your thoughts, and risking criticism is hard! But I’m pushing through it because I know that if I keep going, I’ll eventually create a business I love.
The Myth of “Finding” the Perfect Thing
Stop waiting to “find” the perfect job, the perfect person, or the perfect life. Create it. Find something you like, stick with it, and you’ll learn to love it over time. You don’t have to get it right the first time - try different things, keep what works, and move on from what doesn’t.
