What Is the Hero’s Journey? (And What Does It Have to Do With Affiliate Marketing?)
Are You Ready to Be the Hero of Your Own Story?
Let me ask you something: Have you ever felt like life is on autopilot? You wake up, do the things you’re supposed to do, go to bed, and then wake up to do it all over again. It’s not bad, exactly - but deep down, there’s a little voice whispering, This isn’t it. There’s got to be more.
That voice? It’s your call to adventure.
Every single one of us is living a story. The question is, are you the hero of yours - or just a background character watching from the sidelines? Whether you’re stuck in a 9-to-5 grind, dreaming of financial freedom, or simply craving something more meaningful, you’re closer to stepping into your own hero’s journey than you think.
This isn’t just about affiliate marketing (although we’ll get to that). It’s about transformation. It’s about recognizing that the life you’ve been living doesn’t have to be the life you keep living. It’s about adventure, growth, and - yes - a few dragons to slay along the way.
So, grab your sword (or laptop), because we’re about to embark on an epic quest to uncover the Hero’s Journey - and how it holds the secret to your next big adventure. Whether you’re here to learn about building an online income or looking for inspiration to shake up your life, this is the starting point.
Are you ready to see yourself as the hero? Then let’s begin.
The Ordinary World: Where It All Begins
In every hero’s tale, we start in the Ordinary World - a place of familiarity, safety, and predictability. It’s where the hero begins their story, often feeling stuck or unfulfilled, yearning for something more but unsure of what that “more” is.
For me, the Ordinary World was my life as a correctional officer. Each day followed a familiar rhythm: waking up (before dawn in the colder months), slipping into my uniform, and heading to the maximum-security prison where I worked for 15 years. It was a world of strict routines and unyielding order - a place where every action was calculated, every interaction measured.
While the camaraderie with my colleagues provided moments of laughter and connection, there was an underlying monotony that crept into my soul. I remember sitting at my desk, staring at the clock as it ticked through another shift, and thinking, “Is this all there is?”
There were days when I felt like a bystander in my own life, watching it pass by without truly living it. The structure that once offered stability began to feel like a cage, locking me away from dreams I hadn’t even dared to define yet. My job at the maximum-security prison was stable, and in many ways, it was fulfilling. I had a steady pay packet, camaraderie with my colleagues, and a clear routine - and - I actually really liked my job.
But deep down, I felt like I was treading water. The days blurred together, and the spark of excitement that drives personal growth had all but disappeared.
Then - leaving for work before sunrise and returning long after sunset (in the colder months) was far from ideal - especially with night shifts that left me completely drained.
Ordinary World Archetypes: Who Are You in This Phase?
Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey introduces archetypes - universal characters that represent key aspects of our lives and stories. These archetypes help us understand our roles in the world and where we fit into the narrative of our journey. For example, I can see myself reflected in some of these roles.
During my time as a Correctional Officer, I often embodied the Caregiver archetype - someone others leaned on for stability and support in a challenging environment. At the same time, I wrestled with the Shadow - that inner voice of doubt, whispering that stepping away from the security of my job was too risky. Let’s explore these archetypes and how they manifest in modern life:
- The Caregiver:
- The Caregiver is the selfless nurturer, always putting others’ needs before their own. In the Ordinary World, they might be the parent juggling work and family, the friend who’s always there to listen, or the colleague who takes on extra tasks to help the team.
- How this looks today: Maybe you’re the one everyone relies on. You’re dependable but often feel like your own needs take a backseat. You’re giving, but it’s exhausting.
- The Everyman/Everywoman:
- The Everyman is the relatable character - someone who values stability, community, and comfort. They represent the status quo and are often content with their predictable routines… until something stirs them.
- How this looks today: You might have a steady job, a cozy home, and a reliable routine. Life is fine, but deep down, you feel a quiet discontent. There’s a longing for something bigger.
- The Rebel:
- The Rebel questions the rules and seeks freedom. They see the cracks in the system and yearn to break free from the constraints of the Ordinary World.
- How this looks today: You might feel like you’re living someone else’s version of success. You’re dreaming of leaving the grind behind, but you’re not sure how to start.
- The Shadow:
- The Shadow is the inner critic or antagonist. It’s the voice that sows doubt and fear, convincing you that change is too risky.
- How this looks today: This is the part of you that whispers, You’re not ready. You’re too old. What if you fail? It keeps you tethered to the Ordinary World, even when you’re aching to leave.
- The Sage:
- The Sage is the wise observer, someone who sees the patterns and lessons in life but may hesitate to act.
- How this looks today: You might spend hours researching, reading, and learning… but you’re stuck in analysis paralysis, afraid to take the leap.
The Sage is one archetype I definitely vibe with - or at least I think I do when I’m not second-guessing myself. I’m a sucker for learning new things, soaking up knowledge like a sponge, but then... well, let’s just say the execution part doesn’t always get the memo. My brain loves to pull the “you don’t know enough” card, or the classic “you’re not enough” encore. And don’t even get me started on comparing myself to people with 10 or 20 years of experience - it’s like comparing a toddler’s first finger painting to the Mona Lisa. Ridiculous, right? Yet here we are.
Your Ordinary World: A Life of Comfort or a Cage?
The Ordinary World isn’t inherently bad - it’s just… ordinary. It’s the 9-to-5 job, the weekend Netflix binge, the steady yet uninspired life.
But for many of us, comfort can quickly become a cage. You might feel safe, but are you truly happy?
Imagine this: You wake up every morning, commute to a job that pays the bills, and spend your evenings decompressing from the monotony of the day. You tell yourself it’s fine, but there’s a quiet voice inside that says, This can’t be all there is.
Sound familiar? That’s the voice calling you to change. For me, that voice grew louder during those long shifts at the prison. I’d often find myself staring out the window during a rare quiet moment, imagining what life could be like outside the razor wire and routines.
One particular day stands out: a colleague asked me, “If you could do anything, what would it be?” The question hit me harder than I expected because I didn’t have an answer. That moment stuck with me, and it became the seed of a realization - I wanted more than just stability. I wanted freedom, purpose, and the chance to build something meaningful. It was the first time I truly began listening to that voice.
For affiliate marketers, this is where the journey often begins - with the realization that life could be more than the routine.
The Ordinary World: Where Did It All Go?
Picture this: you’re lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, and that familiar thought creeps in - How did I end up here? When you were younger, you probably had a mental roadmap for how life would turn out. You know, the classic checklist: get a good education, land a decent job, find your soulmate, get married, buy a house, and raise a couple of kids who think you’re the greatest thing since sliced bread. Toss in a dog or cat, some weekend BBQs, and the occasional beach trip, and you’re basically living a sitcom life.
But then - life happens.
Sure, you might have checked off most of the boxes. The education? Done. The job? Nailed it. The soulmate? Still amazing (even when they leave socks on the floor). The house? Standing strong, despite its endless maintenance needs. And the kids? Adorable little tornadoes of energy and unpredictability. Yet somehow, the picture-perfect life you imagined feels more like an exhausting reality show - complete with laundry dramas, meal-prep marathons, and lawn-mowing cliffhangers.
All those dreams of spontaneous adventures and carefree evenings? Well, they’ve been replaced by a never-ending to-do list. Mow the lawn, clean the gutters, make sure the kids are fed, bathed, and occasionally hugged. By the time you’ve ticked off today’s responsibilities, tomorrow’s are already lined up, tapping their watches impatiently.
Gone are the days of spur-of-the-moment plans. Now, spontaneity involves deciding what’s for dinner 15 minutes before everyone starts yelling they’re starving. Even catching up with friends feels impossible - because guess what? They’re just as swamped with their own version of this circus.
And let’s talk about quality time with your partner. Once upon a time, you’d curl up on the couch together, maybe watch a rom-com, and fall asleep in each other’s arms, blissfully unaware of what the next day would bring. Now? You’re both running on fumes, trying to juggle work, kids, pets, and the endless list of “stuff” that needs doing. By the time you finally collapse into bed, romance takes a backseat to snoring and half-hearted goodnights.
So, you’re lying there at night, wide awake, thinking: "I did everything I was supposed to. I followed the rules. So why does it feel like I’ve been duped?"
You got the job. You bought the house. You married the person. You’ve got the kids and the responsibilities that come with them. You’ve even got the pet (or two). But instead of living the dream, it feels like you’re stuck in a hamster wheel - running endlessly but getting nowhere.
Life was supposed to be fulfilling. Fun, even! Instead, it’s a constant cycle of stress, worry, and exhaustion. How will you keep paying the bills? Are your kids really okay? Why does your house always feel one minor disaster away from falling apart? And most importantly - "is this it? Is this what life is supposed to be?"
You’re not alone in feeling this way. This quiet, nagging dissatisfaction is what keeps so many people up at night. It’s the root of anxiety, the spark for frustration, and the breeding ground for loneliness - not just the “I’m by myself” kind, but that deeper, aching loneliness that comes from feeling disconnected from your own life.
And let’s face it - years of putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own will do that. It’s no wonder relationships start to strain under the weight of unmet needs and unspoken frustrations.
If this sounds painfully familiar, you’re not alone. And if you’re thinking, There has to be more to life than this, you’re absolutely right.
How Affiliate Marketing Calls to People in Their Ordinary World
Affiliate marketing often enters the picture as a glimmer of hope - a blog post you read, an inspiring YouTube video, or even a Facebook ad promising freedom and flexibility. For me, it was a sleepless night, one of many, spent scrolling through my phone as I tried to escape the mental exhaustion of the daily grind. That’s when I stumbled across an article about earning an income online.
The idea seemed too good to be true. Work from home?
Make money in my pajamas? Could that really be me? My mind raced with the possibilities, but almost immediately, doubt crept in. I wondered if I had the skills, the discipline, or even the right to dream about a different path. But that small spark of curiosity didn’t fade - it began to grow, setting me on a path I never anticipated.
It’s in this phase that many aspiring entrepreneurs begin to dream. The spark is lit, but the fear of stepping into the unknown keeps them tethered to the Ordinary World.

The Call to Adventure
The Call to Adventure: When the Whisper Becomes a Shout
Every hero’s journey begins with a moment of reckoning - a pivotal event or realization that life as they know it cannot continue. This is the Call to Adventure, and it’s as much about awakening as it is about action.
For me, the Call to Adventure came in waves. It wasn’t one big, cinematic moment - no ominous figure handing me a glowing sword. It was more like a series of nudges that became impossible to ignore. The first was the monotony of my daily life as a correctional officer. I’d spent years in a job that, while steady and predictable, left little room for growth or creativity. The second was the quiet voice in my head that kept asking, Is this it? But the real push came when I realized my health was beginning to suffer from years of physical strain and stress. It wasn’t just my body that was tired - it was my spirit.
Recognizing Your Own Call to Adventure
The Call to Adventure can take many forms. It might be a life event, like losing a job or experiencing a health scare. It could be an opportunity - a friend introducing you to a new idea or a chance encounter with someone who’s living the life you dream of. Or, like me, it might be an accumulation of small moments - the realization that you’ve been postponing your dreams for too long, waiting for the perfect time that never arrives.
For me, the tipping point came when I realized the cost of staying in my comfort zone. My health was deteriorating, and I felt like I was losing touch with the things that mattered most. I wanted more time with my family, more freedom to explore my passions, and more control over my life. Affiliate marketing seemed like a lifeline - a way to reclaim what I’d been missing. But answering the call wasn’t easy. It required facing fears, taking risks, and stepping into the unknown.
The Call: A Universal Experience
Everyone’s Call to Adventure is different, but the underlying theme is the same: a pull toward something greater, even if you don’t fully understand what it is yet. Here are some common signs you’re hearing the call:
- Restlessness: You feel an itch you can’t scratch, a sense that there’s more out there for you.
- Discontent: The life you’re living feels too small for your dreams.
- Curiosity: You find yourself drawn to new ideas, opportunities, or people who challenge your status quo.
- Fear and Doubt: Paradoxically, the call often comes with resistance. You’re excited by the possibilities but terrified of failing.
Does any of this resonate with you? If so, you’re not alone. The Call to Adventure is as exhilarating as it is terrifying, but it’s also the first step toward growth and transformation.
My Call: The Role of Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing was my call to adventure, but it didn’t arrive with trumpets and fanfare. It came quietly, late at night, when I was scrolling through my phone after another grueling day. I stumbled across an article about making money online, and something about it clicked. The idea of earning an income from home - on my own terms - felt like the answer to a question I hadn’t dared to ask. Could I really build a life of freedom and purpose? Could I step away from the grind and create something meaningful?
Of course, doubts immediately followed. What if it’s a scam? What if I fail? What if I’m not cut out for this? But that tiny spark of possibility refused to die. It grew into a flame, pushing me to take the first step: research. I devoured blogs, watched videos, and signed up for free resources. The more I learned, the more I realized this wasn’t just a pipe dream. It was a real, tangible opportunity - if I was willing to work for it.
Overcoming the Fear of the Unknown
Answering the Call to Adventure means stepping into uncertainty, and that’s scary. But here’s what I’ve learned: Fear doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It means you’re about to do something brave. Every hero feels fear before they embark on their journey, and every hero learns to face it head-on.
For me, the fear of failure was immense. I worried about what people would think, about wasting time and money, about getting my hopes up only to see them dashed. But the fear of staying stuck - of looking back in 10 years and realizing I’d let my dreams slip away - was even greater. So, I took the leap. I started small, setting aside time each day to learn and experiment. I reminded myself that progress, not perfection, was the goal.
Your Turn: Are You Ready to Answer the Call?
If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already heard your own Call to Adventure. Maybe it’s a whisper, or maybe it’s a shout. Either way, the question is the same: Will you answer it?
You don’t need to have all the answers. You don’t need to be fearless. You just need to take the first step. Whether it’s exploring affiliate marketing, starting a side hustle, or pursuing a passion project, your journey begins with a single decision: to say yes to the adventure.
So, what will it be? Will you stay in the Ordinary World, or will you step into the unknown and see what’s waiting for you? The choice is yours, but remember: The Call to Adventure doesn’t go away. It waits, patiently, until you’re ready to answer.
The time to begin your journey is now. Are you ready to take the leap?

Crossing the Threshold
Crossing the Threshold: The Leap Into the Unknown
Once the hero answers the call, there’s no turning back. Crossing the threshold is the moment of commitment - when the familiar world is left behind, and the unknown stretches out before you. It’s the point where dreams begin to take shape, where action replaces hesitation, and where the journey truly begins.
For me, this step was both thrilling and daunting. I was leaving behind the steady pay packet, the predictable routine, and the safety net of a career I had known for years. But I also knew that staying in my comfort zone meant continuing to feel stuck, restless, and unfulfilled. I had to take that leap into the unknown, even if I didn’t have all the answers.
The Emotional Rollercoaster of the Threshold
Crossing the threshold is rarely smooth sailing. There’s excitement, yes, but also fear, doubt, and a sense of vulnerability. You’re stepping into a world where the rules are different, where challenges await, and where success is uncertain. But here’s the thing: It’s also the world where growth happens.
When I started my journey in affiliate marketing, I felt like I was standing on the edge of a cliff. I’d read the blogs, watched the videos, and even taken some courses, but the idea of actually putting myself out there - of creating content, building a brand, and engaging with an audience - was terrifying. What if no one cared? What if I failed spectacularly? What if I succeeded and didn’t know how to handle it?
The First Steps: Overcoming Resistance
The hardest part of crossing the threshold is often taking the first step. For me, that step was setting up my blog. It was a simple action, but it represented a commitment to my journey. It was me saying, “I’m doing this, even if I don’t know exactly how it will turn out.”
I remember staring at the blank screen, wondering what to write. The cursor blinked at me like it was challenging me to make a move. And then, I just started typing. I wrote about my goals, my fears, and why I was embarking on this adventure. It wasn’t perfect - far from it - but it was real. And that was enough to get the ball rolling.
Allies, Enemies, and Tests Along the Way
In the world of affiliate marketing, as in any hero’s journey, you encounter allies, enemies, and tests as you move forward. Allies might be mentors, supportive friends, or like-minded peers who encourage you to keep going. Enemies could be external challenges like competition or internal ones like self-doubt and procrastination.
For me, one of the biggest tests was staying consistent. It’s easy to get excited about a new venture, but maintaining that enthusiasm when results are slow to come - that’s where the real work begins. I learned to celebrate small wins: a new subscriber, a positive comment, a blog post that resonated with someone. These moments became my fuel, reminding me that progress, no matter how small, was still progress.
Crossing the Threshold in Affiliate Marketing
In affiliate marketing, crossing the threshold might look like launching your first campaign, publishing your first piece of content, or reaching out to your first potential partner. It’s about stepping out of the learning phase and into the doing phase. It’s messy, imperfect, and sometimes downright scary, but it’s also incredibly rewarding.
One of the most transformative moments for me was the first time I received feedback from someone who had read my blog. They told me that my story had inspired them to take their own first step. That’s when I realized that this journey wasn’t just about me. It was about creating a ripple effect, helping others find their courage and start their own adventures.
Your Threshold: Taking the Leap
If you’re standing at the threshold, wondering whether to take the leap, here’s my advice: Start small, but start. You don’t need to have everything figured out. You don’t need to be perfect. You just need to begin.
Ask yourself: What’s one action you can take today to move closer to your goal? Maybe it’s writing your first blog post, signing up for a course, or reaching out to a mentor. Whatever it is, do it. The path will become clearer as you move forward.
Remember, crossing the threshold isn’t just about leaving the familiar behind. It’s about embracing the possibilities that lie ahead. It’s about saying yes to growth, yes to challenges, and yes to the adventure that awaits.
So, are you ready to take the leap? The unknown is calling, and it’s full of opportunities waiting to be discovered.

Tests, Allies and Enemies
Tests, Allies, and Enemies: The Forge of Growth
After crossing the threshold, the hero enters a world filled with new experiences, challenges, and opportunities for growth. This stage is marked by trials that test their resolve, allies who offer support, and enemies who embody the obstacles they must overcome. In this crucible, the hero begins to transform, gaining the skills and resilience needed to move forward.
The Tests: Facing the Unknown
Tests are an integral part of the hero’s journey. They’re the moments when the hero’s strength, courage, and determination are pushed to their limits. For me, one of the earliest tests was learning to navigate the technical side of affiliate marketing. Setting up websites, managing email lists, and creating content felt overwhelming at first - a mountain of tasks I wasn’t sure I could climb.
Then there were the moments of self-doubt. What if I’m not good enough? What if no one reads my content? What if this whole thing is a waste of time? These questions didn’t just whisper; they roared. But each time I faced a test, I reminded myself why I started: to create a life of freedom and purpose, not just for me but for my family.
For you, the tests might look different. Maybe it’s balancing a new venture with a full-time job, dealing with criticism, or overcoming a lack of confidence. Whatever your challenges are, know that they’re not roadblocks - they’re stepping stones.
Allies: The Power of Connection
In every great story, the hero finds allies - people who provide guidance, encouragement, and camaraderie. For me, allies came in the form of mentors like Dean Holland, whose book The Iceberg Effect helped me understand the nuances of affiliate marketing. Dean’s candid insights gave me clarity and direction, helping me avoid common pitfalls and focus on what truly mattered.
Allies also came in the form of online communities. I joined groups where other marketers shared their journeys, offering advice and support. These spaces became invaluable, not just for the practical tips but for the sense of belonging they provided. It’s reassuring to know you’re not alone - that others are facing similar struggles and cheering for your success.
You don’t have to go it alone, either. Seek out your own allies. Maybe it’s a mentor, a supportive friend, or a group of like-minded individuals. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your vision.
Enemies: Overcoming Internal and External Obstacles
Enemies in the hero’s journey aren’t always villainous figures twirling their mustaches. Sometimes, they’re internal - like fear, procrastination, or negative self-talk. Other times, they’re external - like market competition, technical glitches, or unsupportive people who doubt your dreams.
For me, one of the biggest enemies was perfectionism. I’d spend hours tweaking a blog post, trying to make it flawless, only to delay publishing it out of fear it wasn’t good enough. I had to learn that done is better than perfect - that progress matters more than perfection.
Another challenge was staying consistent. It’s easy to lose momentum when results are slow or when life throws curveballs. But I realized that consistency, even in small doses, creates momentum. Each blog post, each email, and each interaction with my audience became a building block in my journey.
The Forge of Growth
Tests, allies, and enemies are the forge where the hero’s transformation begins. They shape you, strengthen you, and prepare you for the road ahead. For me, this stage taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of staying true to my vision.
As you navigate this stage of your journey, remember that every test you face, every ally you meet, and every obstacle you overcome is part of your growth. Embrace the process, celebrate your progress, and keep moving forward.
Your Journey: Navigating Your Own Forge
Think about your own journey. What tests are you facing? Who are your allies? What enemies, internal or external, are standing in your way? Reflect on these questions and use your answers as a roadmap for growth.
The hero’s journey is not about perfection; it’s about perseverance. It’s about showing up, even when it’s hard. It’s about learning from every experience, good or bad, and using those lessons to become stronger, wiser, and more capable.
So, step into the forge. Face the tests, lean on your allies, and confront your enemies. Because every challenge you overcome brings you closer to the hero you’re meant to be.

Approaching the Inmost Cave
The Ordeal: The Crucible of Transformation
Every hero’s journey reaches a critical juncture - the Ordeal. This is the stage where the stakes are highest, the challenges are most intense, and the hero must confront their greatest fears. It’s a moment of crisis and transformation, a crucible where the old self is tested and the new self begins to emerge.
For me, the Ordeal in affiliate marketing wasn’t a single event but a series of moments that pushed me to my limits. It was the long nights spent wrestling with technical issues, the self-doubt that crept in when progress felt slow, and the fear of putting myself out there and being judged. It was messy, uncomfortable, and at times overwhelming - but it was also the most transformative part of my journey.
Facing the Greatest Challenges
The Ordeal often feels like the point of no return. It’s the moment when you’re forced to confront the very things that have been holding you back. For me, one of those challenges was overcoming my fear of failure. I’d spent years convincing myself that staying in my comfort zone was safer, that it was better to dream about success than to risk falling short. But the truth is, avoiding failure had kept me stuck.
Another major challenge was learning to navigate the technical side of affiliate marketing. Setting up funnels, creating content, and optimizing campaigns were skills I didn’t have when I started. Each task felt like a mountain to climb, and there were times when I wanted to give up. But with every hurdle I overcame, I grew more confident and capable.
The Emotional Toll of the Ordeal
The Ordeal isn’t just about external challenges; it’s also an emotional battle. It’s the moment when self-doubt, fear, and impostor syndrome rear their heads. For me, the biggest struggle was believing that I was worthy of success. I’d spent so much time comparing myself to others, measuring my progress against their highlight reels, that I’d forgotten to celebrate my own milestones.
One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is that the path to success is rarely linear. There are setbacks, detours, and moments of despair. But there are also breakthroughs, moments of clarity, and victories that make the journey worthwhile.
Transformation Through the Ordeal
The beauty of the Ordeal is that it’s not just a test; it’s a transformation. It’s the stage where the hero begins to shed their old limitations and step into their potential. For me, this meant letting go of perfectionism, embracing vulnerability, and trusting the process. It meant learning to see failure not as an endpoint but as a stepping stone.
One of the most transformative moments in my journey came when I received feedback from a reader who said my story had inspired them to take their first steps in affiliate marketing. That message was a reminder that my journey wasn’t just about me. It was about creating a ripple effect, helping others find their courage and start their own adventures.
Your Ordeal: Embracing the Challenge
If you’re in the midst of your own Ordeal, know that you’re not alone. Every hero faces moments of doubt and difficulty, but these are the moments that define you. They’re the moments when you discover what you’re truly capable of.
Here are some tips for navigating your Ordeal:
- Embrace the struggle: Growth doesn’t happen without challenge. The discomfort you feel is a sign that you’re pushing your boundaries.
- Celebrate small wins: Every step forward, no matter how small, is progress. Take time to acknowledge your achievements.
- Lean on your allies: Whether it’s a mentor, a friend, or a supportive community, don’t be afraid to ask for help.
- Trust the process: Remember that transformation takes time. Be patient with yourself and stay focused on your vision.
Rising From the Crucible
The Ordeal is not the end of the journey; it’s the beginning of a new chapter. It’s the moment when the hero emerges stronger, wiser, and more resilient. For me, the lessons I’ve learned during this stage have become the foundation of my business and my life.
As you face your own Ordeal, remember that every challenge you overcome brings you closer to the person you’re meant to be. Embrace the struggle, trust in your growth, and keep moving forward. Because on the other side of the Ordeal lies the Reward - and it’s worth every step of the journey.

The Reward - Seizing the Sword
The Reward: Discovering the Treasure Within
After navigating the trials and tribulations of the Ordeal, the hero reaches the Reward stage - a moment of clarity, achievement, and newfound strength. This is where the hard work pays off, where lessons are internalized, and where the hero claims the treasure they’ve been seeking.
Understanding the Reward
The Reward isn’t just about material success; it’s about transformation. It’s the knowledge, skills, and confidence gained through overcoming obstacles. For me, the Reward in affiliate marketing came in the form of personal growth. Yes, earning my first commissions was thrilling, but the true treasure was realizing that I could create something meaningful from scratch.
The Reward might look different for everyone. For some, it’s financial freedom; for others, it’s the ability to spend more time with family or the satisfaction of helping others achieve their goals. Whatever form it takes, the Reward is a reminder that the journey is worth it.
My First Taste of Success
I’ll never forget the day I earned my first affiliate commission. It wasn’t a huge amount - just enough to buy a nice lunch - but it felt monumental. It was proof that my efforts were paying off, that I was on the right track. That small success gave me the confidence to keep going, to refine my strategies, and to set bigger goals.
But the Reward wasn’t just about money. It was about the connections I was making with my audience, the feedback I received from readers who found value in my content, and the sense of purpose that came from building something of my own. These were the real treasures, the ones that fueled my passion and kept me moving forward.
Sharing the Treasure
In the Hero’s Journey, the Reward is often something that can be shared. The hero doesn’t just keep the treasure for themselves; they bring it back to their community, using it to inspire and uplift others. For me, this meant sharing my story, my insights, and the lessons I’d learned along the way.
One of the most rewarding aspects of affiliate marketing has been helping others start their own journeys. Whether it’s through a blog post, an email, or a conversation, I’ve found immense joy in being able to guide and encourage others. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone else succeed because of something you’ve shared.
Your Reward: What Awaits You
As you navigate your own journey, think about what your Reward might look like. What’s the treasure you’re seeking? Is it financial freedom, personal growth, or the ability to make a difference in others’ lives? Whatever it is, keep it in mind as you face challenges and push through obstacles.
Here are some ways to identify and claim your Reward:
- Reflect on your goals: What inspired you to start this journey? Revisit your “why” to stay focused and motivated.
- Celebrate your wins: No matter how small, every achievement is a step toward your ultimate Reward. Take time to acknowledge your progress.
- Share your success: Use your experiences to inspire and help others. The more you give, the more you’ll receive in return.
- Keep growing: The Reward isn’t the end of the journey; it’s a milestone. Use it as a foundation for your next adventure.
Building Momentum From the Reward
The Reward stage is a turning point. It’s a moment to celebrate, but it’s also a moment to plan for what’s next. For me, the Reward wasn’t just a destination; it was a launchpad. It gave me the confidence to dream bigger, to take on new challenges, and to continue growing both personally and professionally.
Remember, the Reward is about more than just reaching a goal. It’s about becoming the person you’re meant to be. Embrace the treasure you’ve earned, and use it to fuel the next chapter of your journey.

The Road Back
The Road Back: Returning with the Elixir
The hero’s journey doesn’t end with the Reward. There’s a final, critical stage where the hero must take what they’ve learned and bring it back to their world. This is the Road Back - the transition from adventure to reality. It’s a time of reflection, reintegration, and sharing the lessons gained along the way.
The Challenges of the Road Back
Returning from an extraordinary journey to an ordinary world can feel jarring. For me, the Road Back meant figuring out how to translate my newfound knowledge and confidence in affiliate marketing into sustainable, real-world action. It’s one thing to achieve a breakthrough; it’s another to maintain and grow it.
One challenge I faced was staying consistent. The excitement of early wins can fade, and the grind of day-to-day work can feel daunting. But I’ve learned that consistency is where the magic happens. Showing up every day, even when motivation is low, is what turns small victories into lasting success.
Reintegration: Applying the Lessons
The Road Back is about more than just maintaining momentum; it’s about applying the lessons learned during the journey. For me, this meant re-evaluating my strategies, doubling down on what worked, and letting go of what didn’t. It also meant continuing to invest in my growth - reading, learning, and experimenting to refine my approach.
Reintegration also involves sharing the “elixir” - the wisdom and insights gained from the journey. For me, this has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of affiliate marketing. Whether it’s through blog posts, emails, or social media, sharing my story and the lessons I’ve learned has allowed me to connect with others and inspire them to start their own journeys.
The Community Aspect
One of the most rewarding parts of the Road Back has been building a community. The connections I’ve made with readers, fellow marketers, and mentors have been invaluable. It’s a reminder that success isn’t a solo endeavor. It’s about lifting others up as you climb, creating a ripple effect of growth and inspiration.
Your Road Back: Practical Steps
As you navigate your own Road Back, consider these practical steps:
- Reflect on your journey: Take time to evaluate what you’ve learned and how you’ve grown. What worked? What didn’t? Use these insights to refine your approach.
- Stay consistent: Success is built on consistent effort. Create a routine that keeps you moving forward, even on challenging days.
- Share your story: Your experiences can inspire and guide others. Don’t be afraid to share your journey, including the highs and the lows.
- Build your community: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who support and challenge you. Collaboration and connection can amplify your success.
The Hero’s Legacy
The Road Back is about creating a lasting impact. It’s about taking the treasure you’ve earned and using it to make a difference - for yourself, your family, and your community. For me, this has meant not only growing my affiliate marketing business but also helping others see what’s possible when they step outside their comfort zones.
As you walk your own Road Back, remember that your journey isn’t just about you. It’s about the lives you touch, the inspiration you provide, and the legacy you leave behind. Embrace this stage with the same courage and determination that brought you through the Ordeal, and know that the best is yet to come.

The Resurrection
The Resurrection: The Final Test
The Resurrection is the climactic stage of the Hero’s Journey. This is where the hero faces their ultimate challenge, one that requires them to draw on everything they’ve learned and become throughout the journey. It’s a final test that brings transformation full circle, ensuring the hero is truly ready to take on their new role in the world.
The Ultimate Challenge
For many heroes, the Resurrection represents a moment of reckoning - a challenge that forces them to confront not only external obstacles but also the lingering doubts, fears, and insecurities within. For me, this stage appeared as a series of moments when I had to step out of my comfort zone and into the spotlight.
One of the most defining challenges I faced was creating video content for my affiliate marketing business. I’ve always been more comfortable behind the scenes, but I knew that to connect with my audience and build trust, I needed to show up as my authentic self. The first time I hit record, my nerves were through the roof. What if I stumbled over my words? What if people didn’t resonate with my message? But with every video I created, I grew more confident, realizing that perfection wasn’t the goal - connection was.
A Symbolic Death and Rebirth
The Resurrection often involves a symbolic death and rebirth. The hero sheds their old self - the one bound by fear, doubt, and limitations - and steps fully into their new identity. For me, this meant letting go of the perfectionism and self-doubt that had held me back for so long. It meant embracing vulnerability, taking risks, and trusting that I had something valuable to offer.
One particularly transformative moment came when I received a message from a reader who said my content had inspired them to start their own affiliate marketing journey. That message was a turning point. It reminded me that my journey wasn’t just about me; it was about the impact I could have on others. In that moment, I felt a profound sense of purpose and clarity.
Lessons from the Resurrection
The Resurrection is more than just a test; it’s a moment of profound transformation. Here are some of the key lessons I’ve learned from this stage:
- Embrace vulnerability: True connection comes from authenticity. Don’t be afraid to show your struggles and share your story.
- Focus on impact: Your journey isn’t just about achieving your goals; it’s about the difference you can make in the lives of others.
- Trust the process: Transformation takes time. Be patient with yourself and trust that every step, no matter how small, is bringing you closer to your ultimate vision.
Your Resurrection: Rising to the Challenge
As you navigate your own Resurrection, consider what challenges you’re facing and how they’re shaping you. What fears or doubts do you need to let go of? What lessons have you learned that can guide you forward?
Here are some steps to help you embrace your Resurrection:
- Identify your ultimate challenge: What’s the one thing that scares you most about your journey? That’s likely your Resurrection moment.
- Draw on your strengths: Reflect on the skills, knowledge, and resilience you’ve gained throughout your journey. Use them to face your challenge with confidence.
- Visualize your transformation: Picture yourself on the other side of your challenge. Who are you becoming? What does your new life look like?
The Hero Reborn
The Resurrection is the hero’s final transformation. It’s the moment when you step fully into your power, ready to take on your new role and embrace the future with confidence. For me, this stage has been about more than just overcoming challenges; it’s been about discovering who I am and what I’m capable of.
As you face your own Resurrection, remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth. Embrace the process, trust in your transformation, and know that you’re becoming the hero of your own story.

The Return with the Elixir
The Return with the Elixir: Sharing the Gift
The final stage of the Hero’s Journey is the Return with the Elixir. This is the culmination of the entire adventure, where the hero brings back the treasure, wisdom, or gift they’ve gained to share with their community. It’s a moment of fulfilment and purpose, as the journey transforms from a personal endeavour into a shared legacy.
What Is the Elixir?
The elixir isn’t always a physical object. More often, it’s the knowledge, perspective, and growth that come from overcoming challenges and pushing boundaries. In the world of affiliate marketing, the elixir might be the strategies you’ve mastered, the mindset shifts you’ve experienced, or the inspiration you provide to others through your story.
For me, the elixir was the realization that I could create something meaningful while helping others do the same. The journey taught me that success isn’t just about personal achievements - it’s about the impact you make and the lives you touch along the way.
Sharing the Elixir
The Return with the Elixir is about more than just enjoying the rewards of your hard work; it’s about giving back. For me, this meant using my journey to guide others who were just starting out. Through my blog, emails, and social media, I’ve been able to share not only the practical tips and strategies I’ve learned but also the lessons about resilience, courage, and growth.
One of the most rewarding experiences has been hearing from readers and followers who say my content has inspired them to take action. Knowing that my story has helped someone else take their first step toward building a better life is the ultimate reward. It’s a reminder that the journey isn’t just about me; it’s about creating a ripple effect that extends far beyond my own achievements.
The Impact of the Return
When the hero returns with the elixir, they often take on a new role - one of leader, mentor, or guide. For me, this has meant stepping into a position of responsibility and using my platform to uplift others. It’s about creating a community where people feel supported, encouraged, and empowered to pursue their own journeys.
This stage is also a time of reflection. Looking back on the challenges I’ve faced, the lessons I’ve learned, and the growth I’ve experienced has given me a deep sense of gratitude. It’s a reminder that every struggle, every setback, and every victory was a vital part of the journey.
Your Return with the Elixir
As you navigate your own Hero’s Journey, think about what your elixir might be. What lessons, skills, or insights have you gained that could benefit others? How can you use your journey to inspire and uplift those around you?
Here are some ways to share your elixir:
- Tell your story: Share your journey - the highs, the lows, and everything in between. Your authenticity will resonate with others and encourage them to start their own adventures.
- Offer guidance: Use your knowledge and experience to help others navigate their challenges. Whether it’s through mentorship, content creation, or one-on-one conversations, your guidance can make a difference.
- Build a community: Create a space where people can connect, learn, and grow together. A supportive community can amplify the impact of your elixir and create lasting change.
- Stay humble: Remember that the journey never truly ends. Continue learning, growing, and evolving as you share your elixir with the world.
The Hero’s Legacy
The Return with the Elixir is the hero’s opportunity to create a lasting legacy. It’s a chance to take everything you’ve learned and use it to make the world a better place. For me, this means continuing to build my affiliate marketing business, sharing my story, and helping others find their own paths to success.
Your legacy is shaped by the lives you touch and the impact you make. As you share your elixir, remember that you’re not just completing a journey; you’re starting a new chapter. Embrace this stage with the same courage and determination that brought you through the rest of the journey, and know that your story has the power to inspire others to embark on their own adventures.

Refusal of the Call
Conclusion: Your Hero’s Journey Awaits
The Hero’s Journey is a timeless story, but it’s more than just a narrative framework. It’s a mirror reflecting the universal experiences we all share - our struggles, our growth, and our transformations. Whether you’re embarking on your first affiliate marketing adventure, exploring new opportunities, or simply dreaming of a better life, this journey is for you.
As we’ve explored, every hero starts in the ordinary world. It’s a place of routine, safety, and predictability - but also one of longing, frustration, and untapped potential. It’s here that the call to adventure stirs within us, urging us to step beyond the familiar and into the unknown.
Embracing Your Role as the Hero
Let me ask you: Have you ever felt a quiet, persistent voice urging you to take a leap? Have you ever wondered if there’s more to life than the daily grind? That’s your call to adventure. It’s the moment when you realize that staying where you are is no longer an option - when the fear of staying stuck becomes greater than the fear of stepping forward.
Take Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope. His ordinary world is the moisture farm on Tatooine. The monotony and predictability of life feel stifling, and he longs for something more. Then comes his call to adventure - the discovery of Princess Leia’s message, pushing him to embrace a purpose far greater than he could have imagined. Like Luke, many of us feel that pull, that whisper of something beyond our current reality.
For me, that call came in the form of affiliate marketing. Working in a maximum-security prison, my life felt routine and confining, much like Luke’s farm. The idea of building something of my own was as thrilling as joining the Rebellion, but it was also intimidating.
But answering that call isn’t easy. Fear and doubt will creep in. You’ll wonder if you’re ready, if you’re capable, if you have what it takes. Trust me, I’ve been there. I’ve wrestled with imposter syndrome, procrastination, and the fear of failure. But here’s what I’ve learned: You don’t have to be fearless to start. You just have to be willing.
Finding Your Mentor and Allies
No hero embarks on their journey alone. Along the way, mentors appear to guide, encourage, and equip them for the challenges ahead. For me, mentors like Dean Holland have been invaluable - not because they handed me success on a silver platter, but because they showed me the path and encouraged me to walk it.
Think of Frodo in The Lord of the Rings. At first, he’s reluctant to leave the Shire. The weight of the One Ring and the dangers of the journey terrify him. But Gandalf’s wisdom and encouragement give him the courage to take that first step. Similarly, my mentors have been my guiding lights, helping me navigate the challenges of affiliate marketing.
And let’s not forget the allies. Whether it’s a supportive community, a trusted friend, or an inspiring podcast, surrounding yourself with positive influences can make all the difference. These allies remind you that you’re not alone and that every step forward is worth celebrating.
Facing the Ordeal
Every hero faces a defining moment - a test that challenges them to their core. In affiliate marketing, this might look like launching your first campaign, publishing your first blog post, or stepping in front of the camera for the first time. These moments are daunting, but they’re also transformative. Each challenge you overcome builds your confidence, sharpens your skills, and brings you closer to your goals.
Remember Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. Her ordeal in the arena is life-or-death, but it’s also where she grows the most, learning to trust her instincts and form critical alliances. While your challenges in affiliate marketing might not involve dodging fireballs, they will test your patience, resilience, and determination. When I faced my own ordeals, I found strength in remembering why I started. For me, it was about creating a life of freedom and connection - a life where I could be fully present for my grandchildren and make a positive impact on others. What’s your why? Hold onto it. Let it be the anchor that keeps you steady when the waves get rough.
Returning with the Elixir
The true magic of the Hero’s Journey lies in the return. It’s not just about what you achieve; it’s about what you share. The lessons you learn, the wisdom you gain, the growth you experience - these are the treasures you bring back to your world. And in sharing them, you create a ripple effect that extends far beyond yourself.
Neo’s return in The Matrix is a powerful example. When he fully accepts himself as “The One,” he not only conquers his own doubts but also gains the ability to bend the Matrix to his will. His newfound power allows him to protect and uplift others. Similarly, the elixir I bring back isn’t just about affiliate marketing tips - it’s about the resilience, courage, and clarity that have transformed my life.
For me, the elixir has been the ability to inspire and guide others who are starting their own journeys. Through my blog, emails, and social media, I’ve had the privilege of connecting with people who, like me, are searching for something more. Seeing their progress, hearing their stories, and knowing that my journey has made a difference - that’s the greatest reward of all.

Hi, Sean!
This is a fantastic post! I love how you use Joseph Campbell’s description of the hero’s journey to illustrate our journeys into starting a business. One of my favorite parts is, “Your journey isn’t just about achieving your goals; it’s about the difference you can make in the lives of others.” My reason for working on my business is to take care of my family’s needs. It’s a good reminder in times when I particularly need a hero’s resilience (tech problems/tech. learning curves, esp.) to remember I can help my family whenever needed if I persist.
I am definitely the Everywoman. I want nothing more than a cozy home and to enjoy my daily life. (I’m a bit of a hobbit.) I feel the need to go on an adventure and make sure those needs will be met when the unexpected happens. I’m in the testing stage of the adventure now. I wonder if I will know when I face the ordeal that I’ve reached that point. I think I’m not there yet. I am still learning and trying to apply all I’m learning together into one working system. I feel like a bit of a clown juggling many different pieces. A hero is a much better symbol to adopt!
This post really is stellar. I’ll come back to it now and again to be inspired along my way. Thank you for all the obviously hard work you put into it. It is an elixir you’ve shared with us!
Thanks Nakina. I do really like the Hero’s Journey. It’s been used in movies and stories forever – it just took Joseph Campbell to clarify it for us.
I am so glad that you got something out of this post. It took some time to put it all together and post it, so I am very pleased that you liked it.
